A physical release is planned if there is interest. If you would like a copy, please send me an email stating your intention! I will make a handful for promotion purposes and then mail out the remainder to people who are nice, or at least constructive. I like hearing from people!

If you would like to know more, maybe I can interest you in some tracks which did not make the cut? A simultaneous release, Insecurity Blanket, is a collection of tracks which do not fit the Grand Plan of this record. They do not sound like this at all, but they are availible for those who want them.

It's interesting how people change. Growing up is a long, strange process, and it's something I'm sort of dabbling in half-heartedly at the moment. Some people grow up, some people just get taller. I'm not sure which I want to be yet.

I was eighteen years old yesterday. That's a pretty big milestone, by any standard. I can now legally do almost anything. In the eyes of the law, I'm an adult.

So let's pause for a moment and take stock of my current situation. I'm just about to do my A levels, and the grades I get in them will dictate whether I get to stay in education or have to go out into the Big Scary World. I've got a wonderful group of friends, and I'm courting a very lovely young lady. Just two days ago I did my last day of sixth form, so I have from now until September off to get my shit together no matter what. I've got a crappy job, but I like everyone there. I was voted Most Likely To Start A Revolution by my compatriots in our yearbook. I went and saw Avenue Q with my young lady on Tuesday night, went to the sixth form ball on Thursday, and saw Broken Social Scene at the Sheperd's Bush Empire last night.

Everything's changing at the moment. This summer is likely to be the time of our lives, if we do it right.

As y'all probably know, I'm pretty majorly into the anti-copyright movement when it comes to music. The larger the public domain the better, and in the long term it's in the interest of artists to release their music for free. Plus, there's the fact that artists who release on major labels barely see a penny from album sales, and the whole system is unfairly weighted towards record companies. Also, the fact that the RIAA are suing downloaders and then keeping the settlement money instead of giving it to artists ( http://torrentfreak.com/riaa-keeps-settlement-money-080228/ ) is worth considering when defending their actions.

I could go on and on about this, but I have a feeling everyone will switch off, when I'm ultimately trying to promote some artists.

Recently, a couple of bands have jumped aboard the free-music idea. Each and every one has been accused of copying Radiohead, which is kinda bullshit because Radiohead did it a little wrong, but the trend has developed and I can't complain about it.

So, without further ado, here's the latest addition of Free Music From Lovely Ethical Artists.

First up, Nine Inch Nails have released a new album, Ghosts I-IV, for free. Trent Reznor, NIN frontman, was heavily involved in the release of Saul Williams' "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust" a few months back, which was released in a similar manner. The basic premise is a choice between a free, 192kbps mp3 copy, or a $5 multi-format copy. There are also other options availible for this release, such as a $300(!) ultra-deluxe limited edition package, which truly hardcore fans can buy. Which is, y'know, pretty cool. Pick it up here:

I'm planning on buying the $10 CD copy when I put some money in the bank, because I make a point to support this kinda thing.

Also interesting is The Charlatans. Now, whilst I'm not a huge fan of their music, I can't fault their practices; they've released their new album completely free (at 192kbps DRM-free MP3) via the Xfm website. You can also buy a CD copy for £12 on their website. I'm probably not going to buy the CD, but if they put up a paypal link I might sling a few quid their way. Pick up the album here:

Not quite so recent, but nonethless interesting; The Flashbulb has released his latest album, "Soundtrack to a Vacant Life", for free on a variety of bittorrent trackers, accompanied by a text file explaining his motivations. Okay so guys, the next Scientology raid is on March 15th. The site about it is here:

The thing is, on that same day there is also an anti-war protest, which frankly I think is a far better cause to be protesting about. Whilst Scientology is a pain in the arse, and the protest will be a good laugh, stopping the war is an issue that's rather more urgent. When you take into account that around a million people have turned up for these marches in the past, and they are estimating similar numbers this time, I think that the scientology protest is likely to look more than a little irrelevant next to it. And when a protest looks irrelevant, you have to wonder what the point of going in the first place is.

There is a fancy dress party coming up. The theme is Heroes And Villains.

I am pretty much set on going as the self-created Captain Awkward, whose superpower consists of making every situation as awkward as possible for all those involved. This is based on both the incredible amount of hilarity this would cause and the fact that certain people have agreed to buy me drinks all night if I say certain things to certain other people.

However, I need suggestions. What costume do you think that Captain Awkward would wear, were he a typical superhero?

Proviso: Costume should be cheap and easy to make for lazy people such as me. It should also cause maximum possible social awkwardness to all involved.

If any of y'all have come across my blog before, you may remember me doing the NaNoWriMo challenge. You will probably have realised by now that I'm a hella sucker for stuff like that, especially when it coincides with interests I already have.

Well, in a shocking twist of fate, I'm doing it again. Sort of.

The challenge is to write a 10 song (or 35 minute) album in the space of a month. I've signed up (under Bionic Sheep, in case you didn't guess) and I'm planning to see what comes out of it.

Usually at this point in an entry like this I would encourage everyone else to sign up, but honestly I don't know why I'm doing this myself. I'm a big proponent of the "Done When It's Done" philosophy to writing music. Some days I'll knock out three tracks in a matter of hours, then I'll go weeks without doing anything. That's just the way it goes, so forcing myself to focus and write loads of stuff in a month seems pretty silly.

Then again, as it says on the front page, it's really easy to think of excuses not to do this, whereas it's very difficult to sit down and actually do. And I ain't one to be pussying out of a little bit of creative insanity, especially when they talk about stuff like free culture and the death of the music industry so openly. I'm a real sucker for that kinda thing.

So yeah. If anyone else is interested in recording some music, now's as good a time as any. I can't see any of y'all doing this, truth be told, but never let it be said I didn't try!

Bloody hell, 2008 already is it?

2007 was a good year. A turbulent one, for sure, but a damn good one nonetheless. I think I've come out of it rather differently to how I went into it, and change has to be mostly a good thing? I'm certainly a lot less hairy now, which has to be a good thing; no more being mistaken for a girl, or worse, a metalhead.

I've shed a few friends and cemented some others, so that's been nice. This year is going to be a big one, this I know for sure. I think, on the balance, I'm looking forward to it.

New Year's Resolutions, then:
- Read more books
- Keep making music
- Work hard and get into a good uni
- Stay in contact with all my Most Excellent Friends
- Enjoy everything, regardless of fuck ups

I think those are perhaps achievable, with the last one being the most important, because it compensates for failures in any of the other areas.

'08 has been good to me so far; here's to it. Happy new year, all. :)

Christmas is over, and I'm bored. So I figure it's time to talk about music. Without further ado, here's my top ten albums of 2007.

10. Future of the Left - Curses
A friend of mine was nattering with me earlier on in the year, when I was having a Lightening Bolt phase. Lightening Bolt, in case you don't know, are the loudest band in the entire world; they're a kind of abrasive art-noise-rock kinda band, and if they'd released anything this year it'd surely be in the list. Anyhow, he essentially said "If you like them, you might like Future of the Left", and unsurprisingly, I really do. A ramshackle three piece from Cardiff in Wales, Future of the Left's sound is like a cleaner version of Lightening Bolt; it still has the same messy, loud, chanty quality to it, but it's accessible to people who get turned off by the inpenetrability of the more noise-rock orientated Lightening Bolt. This band is proof that Wales can produce incredible rock music, harking back Fugazi in their heyday whilst maintaining a wonderful sense of humour throughout.

9. The Ike Reilly Assassination - We Belong to the Staggering Evening
Bit of a strange one, this. Picked it up on a complete whim based on a random recommendation in a forum thread, and was surprised to find it was absolutely incredible. It's oldskool americana, rock and roll in the most traditional sense of the word, and yet this album came to absolutely define my summer. From start to finish it's lazy with meaty hooks and crunchy guitars, with vocals just tongue-in-cheek enough to pull off the lyrical swagger. This is an album of sunny days by the river with a beer and a barbeque, and I don't even like beer. High praise indeed.

8. El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
If The Ike Reilly Assassination was my summer album, this was my Late Winter/Early Spring record. The whole album tumbles downwards from the sentiment of the sample at the start of the very first track; "If you were falling in space, would you slow down after a while or keep going faster and faster?". True to that idea, the whole album feels like a spaceship spiralling out of control into the dystopian future-city below, incorporating the government cover up and the family histories of all those on board. On a more human note, this is an album for deserted train stations in the cold, or walking through suburban hell with your headphones turned up to kill. Double amazing when you realise El-P is a skinny white ginger dude, which I didn't at first.

7. Battles - Mirrored
At some point in the future, humans will discover artificial intelligence; we will reach the moment of singularity, when we invent machines more intelligent than us. Those robots will inevitably take over the earth, but that's not what I'm concerned with. When those robots start making rock music, they will sound like Battles. Seeing them live really cemented this with me; Battles are the perfect fusion of man and machine, blending everything incredible about math rock with everything worthwhile about IDM. After the first few tracks, you'll be wondering which parts are sampled and which parts are played 'live', and by the fifth you just won't care. The standout track for me has to be Atlas; it serves as indisputable proof that one day, robots will learn how to rock out.

6. Matrix & Futurebound - Universal Truth
A really late entry right here, due primarily to my inability to take advice. This is, without doubt, the best drum and bass album in years. From the very first track it rocks out with a messy but stylish feel which demonstrates perfectly the abilities of the two people who make it without being over indulgent. Don't misunderstand this record for a moment; it's completely about making highly polished, highly danceable tunes, but there's a self-concious power about it which raises it above most. If you listen to this album without jiggling around and boogying a little bit in your seat, you are dead inside.

5. Saul Williams - The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust
In terms of the release, this album is everything that Radiohead should have been. If I was rating these albums in terms of ethical release practices alone, this would be right at the top. Obviously I don't though, because that would be foolish. Sales gimmicks aside, Saul Williams and Trent Reznor have put together a mind-blowing mixture of deep-as-to-be-inpenetrable lyrics and thudding industrial beats. Even though they're only about half a year apart, I consider this album the spiritual successor to the sound set up on El-P's record further up this list; both borrow heavily from industrial, electronic music, and both are visionary in terms of evolving the hip-hop genre. Whilst I know this kind of stuff is unlikely to be widely picked up outside independent labels, if this is where hip-hop is headed then I will be a happy man. Plus, you can get it for free, or £2.50 if you wan thte high quality version. You really have no excuse not to pick this one up.

4. Radiohead - In Rainbows
After finding out Radiohead still plan to release this on a conventional CD through a mainstream label, I was most upset. The release gimmick has pretty much been exposed as a gimmick, but that doesn't detract from the fact that this is everything I could possibly hope for from a Radiohead release. Once again, they've changed their whole sound without losing their identity at all; this record speaks of settling down and finding your place in the world, whilst still being painfully aware of the toxicity of the world outside your house. To me, it feels like the most organic of Radiohead albums; whereas the others were constructed in a war between man and machine, this album feels like it's been picked out of the plants that grow on top of a toxic waste dump. I'm rambling. It's a good album; check it out.

3. Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Oh my, the title track of this album. Go away and listen to it. Asdfsdf. It is so damn good. Whilst None Shall Pass is definitely the album's strongest track, it doesn't miss a beat throughout the entire ensemble. It also completely crystalises how far Aesop Rock's sound has evolved since the seminal Labour Days; he has reinvented himself several times, and yet the tight genius of his lyrics still holds together everything he creates with an admirable passion. Whilst it's thick as ever, requiring you to listen with absolute concentration to every single line in order to garner the true meaning, that is exactly what Aes has always been about - abstract but tight, intelligent without being broken. Since embracing the higher production values which were lacking from his earlier work, the beats have improved to the point that even the instrumentals are more than listenable. Combined, this makes for an incredible hip-hop record.

2. UNKLE - War Stories
UNKLE have found their niche. After this record, there can be no going back to the hip-hop influenced DJ Shadow era. They are pioneering into a new space in music, fusing trip-hop, heavy rock, pop and dance in an utterly compelling new way. By moving on from their hip-hop roots, UNKLE have created something new entirely, but this doesn't feel like an experimental album for a second; it feels like the seminal album of a whole movement. It's probably the most coherent album of the year, managing to do about six different things all at once without ever feeling schizophrenic. Assuming they keep building on this sound, I expect exciting things from these guys in the future.

1. Burial - Untrue
This album is a funeral which everyone needs to attend. Mourning the death of a genre sounds like the most self-indulgent musical project an artist could get involved with, but the loose, disquieting dubstep which is conjured up by this anonymous South London artist is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Further developing the dark themes of the first album, the vocals are twisted and pitch shifted to sound as if they are constantly on the other side of a wall in a block of flats; indeed, the whole album is understated like a barely overheard domestic, and it resonates with the everyday sadness of city life. It also holds together with a brilliant sense of place. It is the perfect album for walking through London aimlessly in the night, and I know that without even having to try it - you might as well be there, to listen to this. The drums are erratic and broken, and every track clicks and thumps along like a wounded animal, constantly sounding as if it's about to fall over. This is an album of bleak midnight realisations, of frightened children, of haunted tower blocks, and it's undoubtedly the best album released this year. Pick it up right now.

2007 has definitely been a hella good year for music. Here's to 2008. :)

Once a month or so, I run out of internet. All my favourite sites have been read, I don't feel like gaming, and I haven't got anything especially interesting to listen to. This means that I turn to sites like MySpace, Livejournal or Facebook and spend a few hours catching up with the gossip or, as it's otherwise known, stalking everyone I know. This is a Bad Thing, and as such I'm now going to stop that and do something productive; write a nice little entry up on here.

The trouble with updating livejournal is that there's this constant temptation to just make a big list of all the things I've done recently. Trouble is, that can make an intensely boring read, and my memory is pretty shit. However, it does serve as a useful memory jogger at a later date. As such, here's a list, devoid of the pretense of entertainment, of the things which I have done recently, in a completely random order. I'm doing it like this so that anyone who doesn't give a shit (i.e. most people) can skip on past it.

And that's pretty much how it goes in Martinsville.

Sometime towards the end of this month, I'm going to write up my top ten albums of the year for everyone to ignore. There's actually been some really good music released this year, so that should be interesting. I'm tempted to also make a list of awesome albums I've only just discovered, despite being released many years ago, but that's an obscenely wide brief, and it's likely to end up even more drawlingly self-indulgent than a top 10 of this year.

On a side note, does anyone know what the fuck I.K.D means? Loads of people have it in their myspace names, but I have no idea what it means. Until someone explains it to me, I'm going to assume it means "Illegal Knife Dogs", which sounds like some kind of awesome underground street gang from a 1980s cop show.

I'm going to try and use this blog a bit more, although the entries will no doubt get shorter and more frenzied. Fact is, I'll need a creative outlet throughout the course on NaNoWriMo to prevent myself from going crazy and writing a chapter on how awesome goats are, or something.

It's an interesting list for two reasons. On the one hand, it's like the documentation of a thousand little tragedies. Athletes with big dreams succumbing to the urge to get bigger, be stronger, to be the best, and now they're remembered only for that. Imagine if you could hear the personal stories of every person on that list. I think it'd be the most tragic think ever written.

On the other hand, I was tickled by the fact that the contents reads "A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Horses", as if Horses is another letter of the alphabet. Would be a pain to spell your name if it was. I could be Marhorsestin, and every time I read my name out on the phone I'd have to be all "Yeah, that's 'Martin' but with a silent 'horses' in the middle".

My NaNoWriMo ideas sheet is filling up, although it's still a very vague shape. I have a feeling that I'll end up not really knowing what I'm doing until I'm writing it, as always happens. I donated to the site this morning, though; they're good people, despite the insanity, so I figure slinging a fiver their way ain't going to put me too far out of pocket, and it's going to a good cause, so why not?

So, who's actually going to do NaNoWriMo this year, then?

Hello folks. Today I start my entry in a slightly non-traditional style, by jumping right into the story. To do this, I'm going to start midsentence, like so:

to reading festival last weekend. It was pretty damn fun, truth be told. Five days camping with my friends? OH my yes. A quick run down of the weekend's events would have to start around wednesday, because obviously weekends in Reading are a completely different shape to ones here. I went to Kavey's wednesday night after work and stayed over so that we could head off nice and early next morning. Got up at four, went to the station with some fucking heavy bags, got on the train, got to london, tube wasn't fucking working, got a bus, got a train to reading, walked to the site, queued up for a few hours. The others decided that, what with it being 7am by this point and us having nothing else to do, that getting drunk in the queue would be a nice way to start the day. A 7am beer is quite a sight to behold, for sure.

Got onto the site, wandered round, found a spot, introduced myself to the folk we were camping with. That was a bit awkward, because I am socially inept, although after time we got to know each other a touch better. The first day - Thursday - was mostly spent wandering around getting used to the site and then later stealing a pallette from in town to be sat on and later burnt. A good day, indeed.

In the evening (or it may have been Friday evening? Time loses its meaning after a while) we met two drunken Norwegians who went by the names of Kim and Brian. They were both male, incidentally, and both possibly the biggest legends ever invented. We got drunk by the fire with them most nights, it was pretty awesome!

Friday the music started. I saw:

Sparta

With the undoubted highlight being Sparta (who we went along to simply for the silly name) yelling "WHO HERE HATES GEORGE BUSH? BECAUSE I FUCKING HATE GEORGE BUSH!" just to keep a cheap cheer. Hating George Bush: For people too fucking scared to say they hate conservatives. Other highlights were Brand New (although they made me emo) and Gogol Bordello (who were surprisingly awesome).

On Saturday, I saw:

Please note the awesome two-hit combo on the end of that. I am awesome. Battles have to be my favourite performance of the whole festival, despite the fact that I had to miss most of Arcade Fire to see them; they really were super-incredible. Nine Black Alps were their usual totally intense selves, RHCP were total shite and UNKLE gave me my biggest regret of the festival when I imbibed too many chemicals pre-show and had to go back to the tent early and sleep. I'm informed they were very good though.

On Sunday, the final day, I saw:

Turbonegro

Highlight of the day was Nine Inch Nails, although Turbonegro take a close second. NIN win simply because I got to dance like a big dirty sleaze to Closer, and dancing like a filthy bitch is way fun. Bit frustrated that I didn't get to meet up with my good friend Lydia who was in for the day, but baring in mind aforementioned dirty bitch dancing then it's probably a good thing. Turbonegro were incredible, though; we only went because the aforementioned Norwegians told us they'd be hilarious, and they plainly were. Any band that looks like Dragonforce vs. The Village People and plays songs called "I Got Erection" is clearly worth seeing. Lostprophets were actually surprisingly good, too; it's the first time I've ever enjoyed the song "Rooftops", and the lead singer managed to banted with the crowd without actually being a twat, which is a truly rare talent.

Sunday night was mind-blowing. We burnt just about everything we could lay our hands on, indulged in some bin drumming, witnessed a cage fight and took part in an angry mob. It was an experience, for sure.

The journey home next day was, unsurprisingly, rather soul-destroying, but I was glowing. Definitely going next year, I think, and everyone should join us!
